At the start of each combat encounter, write down an Action on an index card and keep it hidden. When someone performs the written action, you may reveal what you've written and declare they've activated your trap card. They now suffer from the Vulnerable condition until the end of your next turn.

TOTAL CONCENTRATION BREATHING
REQUIREMENTS - Novice, Fast Healer
Through specific breathing patterns, you recover from exhaustion faster than others. When you Soak, you may recover lost Fatigue in addition to negating Wounds.
Aaron Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08760432935440346327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944237944047565489.post-23525488671142059402021-01-06T08:52:00.000-08:002021-01-06T08:52:47.531-08:00BORCHARDBRIAR: BECOMING MONSTERS

The real risk of losing Accord is uncontrolled transformation as the Land's wild magic uses your flesh as a canvas. Spring to summer to autumn to winter and back around again. Laying out the tenets of Thumb and Fist and overwriting the red laws of Tooth and Claw.

Now the cycle's broken with Reynard's arse wedged into Borchardbriar castle, stalling the others in their far flung corners 'til the wheel turns again. But the Accord still holds. Though with all these growling stomachs, I don't know how much longer."

- Cass, Raconteur of Some Renown

ACCORD - Every Wild Card starts with maximum Accord equal to 2 plus half their Spirit die type. As things unfold the GM may call for a Accord check with a modifier based on events. An Accord check is a Spirit roll, the results may modify your current Accord score.

Murder - Killing Folk for any reason other than self defense causes an Accord check at -2.

Backlash - A character with an Arcane Background who triggers Backlash must also make an Accord roll.

Fear - Fright and animal terror cut the noblest beast at the knees. When you fail a Fear check, lose 1 point of Accord.

Relic - Wielding a Relic is playing with fire. Each use of a Cursed Relic causes an Accord check.

Open Road - Out past the borderposts, the Land's wild magic warps Folk. Moreso when they're isolated. Each day you're on the Open Road, make an Accord check with a -2 penalty and adding +1 for each companion.

Viciousness - The Accord is built on trust. Being a bastard undercuts that. Predatory and cruel acts cause an Accord check, with a penalty (-1 or -2) at the GM's discretion.

LOSING ACCORD

The real risk of losing Accord is uncontrolled transformation as the Land's wild magic uses your flesh as a canvas, turning you into a worthy predator. But maybe a little monstrosity is fine, given the stakes. When you lose points of Accord, you temporarily gain a Tinge. Draw a card for each point lost and apply the card of your choice, gaining the corresponding Tinge. At your next Advancement you can choose to keep the Tinge instead, otherwise it blows away on the wind. Be sure to conceal you Tinges, the Wyld Breakers are always on the look for Folks meddling with the Old Times.

If your Accord reaches 0 then you're lost until the next full moon as the wild magic overwhelms you. The GM takes control of your character and draws 4 cards, applying all corresponding Tinges.

RECOVERY

The most effective way to recover lost Accord is building trust and community. So lend a paw by helping out, doing things for others, pitching in without being asked, and taking nothing in return. Additionally, every lunar cycle, equinox, and solstice that goes by without any further Accord loss, you regain a point of Accord. You may want to promote one of the Network Contacts to a full fledged Cell Member and play them while your other character is on the mend.

Accord cannot go above the starting value, minus 1 for each Tinge. Nor can Accord go below 0.

New Edge:

DEFY FATE

REQUIREMENTS - Legendary, Spirit d10

Choose 1 Skill rated d10 or greater. Asif Khan grew up in a Pakistani village surrounded by the Himalayas. As the mountains dominated his vision, they similarly dominated his life. He started mountain climbing to conquer these titans and symbolically rise above his origins. He was not prepared for how literal this would be.

While scaling a recently shifted mountainside, Asif discovered a metallic giant packed in the ice and snow, thawing out under the sun. He drew close to the enormous figure and reached out, brushing the metal skin with his fingertips. In a flash the figure disappeared into Asif.
We're drowning in fantastic animation. In the age of Avatar, Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power you're easily forgiven the sin of overlooking the excellent 2011 ThunderCats series. After all, it hasn't been on any streaming service as far as I know.

Recently added to Hulu, the 2011 series was planned for 52 episodes but tragically cut in half when the toy sales failed to meet expectations. I don't use the word "tragic" lightly considering how good the 26 episodes were I wish the studio could have finished their tale. I hold no nostalgia for the original series and this series grabbed me by the throat. The stakes are high, the animation fluid, the voice acting is top notch, and the characters draw you in. In the alternate world where the 2011 ThunderCats reached its conclusion, we might praise it as effusively as Avatar: the Last Airbender.

Both ThunderCats (1985) and ThunderCats (2011) are streaming on Hulu right now.

Though related to Tintin, Gil Jordan, Lupin III, and other continental adventurers, Corto carries himself more as a pulpy Sinbad the Sailor. Embarking on adventures for lost Imperial Spanish gold and thwarting Nazi spies for the sake of outrunning boredom than the allure of wealth or pursuit of truth. Along the way he crosses paths with historical figures like Rasputin, Butch Cassidy, Ernest Hemingway, and Jack London.

With striking black and white art from an artist at the height of his powers and narrative depth belying comics, Corto Maltese
is well worth the time. Especially if you love pulp adventure tales
staring colonialism's ugliness full-on. This series is definitely in the
Old Man's Bar DNA. The stories have most recently been translated and
printed by IDW and some animation was done 4-5 years ago.

Aaron Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08760432935440346327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944237944047565489.post-12284665434305765632020-06-24T09:59:00.001-07:002020-06-30T20:49:35.797-07:00Tuesday Reviewsday: The Sinner

We're all spending time at home as the Troubles extend into a 4th month and probably watching a lot of TV. If so, you've found you can only watch Terriers (on Hulu right now) so many times before you need a new crime drama. You can replace Terriers with something else more fitting your tastes - True Detective, Black Spot, The Shield, Bosch, The Glades, or what-have-you. But the sentiment is the same.

There's a LOT of good media out there but we consistently return to the crime drama/police procedural well for some degree of comfort. Even in the most hardboiled or noir story offer a structure delineating the good, the bad, and the bad-but-good-enough-to-live-with into boxes and delivering some sort of justice in an increasingly unjust world. The Sinner dumps those comfortable boxes out on the floor and kicks the contents into the wall where hey break and spill, leaking their contents into a runny mess defying a shallow viewing. In the first season Jessica Biel plays Cora Tanetti, a seemingly placid housewife, who stabs a man to death at a public beach in upstate New York. Bill Pullman plays Detective Harry Ambrose, a police detective on the rocks, who feels a pull that Cora's crime is a part of something larger and, like a bad tooth, just can't leave it alone.

If you enjoy being pushed out into deep water and feeling your way back to shore, then The Sinner would be for you.

The Sinner seasons 1 & 2 are currently on Netflix.

It's been a long time since my last post, but I've been really busy writing adventures and mysteries for games such as: Savage Rifts, Trophy, and Brindlewood Bay. Besides being the Head Writer for a ZineQuest 2 Kickstarter project Oligarchy - a game of political folly. Those are all wrapping up in the near future so I have time to get back to Tuesday Reviewsday.

Earlier this month we finished watching Space Dandy! a science fiction comedy anime from Shinchiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo fame. Over the course of the series, the titular character travels the star in his tiki themed spaceship searching for alien lifeforms, falling in love, and hanging out at an interstellar Hooters. It's a love letter to fishbowl helmets, rayguns, scantily clad ladies, Americana, and high adventure across a lurid galaxy. Every episode shares a loose continuity but rarely impact one another. Which is probably for the better since that gives each episode room to breathe, no matter how gonzo or ridiculous the individual premise may seem.

Overall the show alternates between lighthearted and poignant, delivering a heartfelt salute to its influences while leaning on animation's strengths. Similar to Watanabe's other series the soundtrack is impeccable. I mean, watch this:

If you like pulpy sci-fi stories like Flash Gordon, the Original Star Trek, Secret of Sinharat or Barbarella you should check out Space Dandy! On the surface, Guardia resembles any mythical medieval sphere across the humpbacked sky except a hyperdimensional parasite, the Devourer, slumbers at the world's heart. Its dreams peel away at potential timelines, grooming all life to an ideal form for consumption. This process left the wall between epochs thin if you wish to travel between them.

Upon arriving via golden barge, you can enter a "time gate" to visit 3 other distinct eras: Prehistory - where humans, dinosaurs, and lizard-men are locked in a struggle for survival, the Middle Ages - a high romance of knights and magic, and the Wastes- where destitute humans huddle for shelter in arcologies away from the mutants and killer robots outside. A research mission from the Academy of Doors can be found in Truce, trying to find a path to the "End of Time".

The modern city of Clowdertown was established as two separate holdfasts grew together over time, an otter fishing village on the southern coast and a cat trading settlement in the upper delta. Since then it's endured a searat invasion, hurricanes, the Blight, and Greeneyes' reign of terror. Through it all the city, and its people, have held together. But that was back in the Bad Old Days when events felt fleeting before returning to an illusion of stability. Before the constant pressures of the Tithe and starvation.

These days, Reynard's eternal autumnal boughs frame a city known for two things: its prosperity and carefully balanced "neutrality" regarding the Foxlord. While the rustic villages and riverside towns throughout the land simmer with resentment against the Tithe, the other cities have proven silent, if not eager, collaborators. Clowdertown sends the fewest kits possible and selects them by lottery to maintain a pretense of impartiality. These practices make the city a destination for families at risk and a fertile recruiting ground for any sort of rebellion.

Clowdertown's Oddities
The Abbess - A killer prowling Waterside almost exclusively, their victims are found in a penitent's pose. Though the bounty keeps escalating with each victim, Waterside residents won't help the Meow Street Runners track the Abbess down.

"Feathers" - Notable for the dietary demands of its citizenry, cats and otters'
demand for meat supports a thriving fish market and an illegal trade in
poached songbirds aka "feathers". Rumors occasionally surface of more exclusive clubs hidden in the richest corners.

Gutter Regattas - Illegal boat races between otter crews to ultimately compete in the Great Row, an annual festival and competition in honor of the Birthing Waters. The winners' families are immune to the Tithe until the next festival.

Poison Gardens - Greeneyes strictly prohibited carrying weapons larger than a knife so the aristocracy found other ways to dispose of rivals. The cultivation and use of toxic, intoxicating, and narcotic plants was one of them. Most common in Verdauga and Heather Reach, you can find small bunches of dubious potency elsewhere.

Reticules - Small drawstring pouches traditionally containing toxic paste should a beast need to dip a blade or claw for self defense, or assassination. Now a fashion item embroidered or beaded sometimes signalling political affiliations or more clandestine desires.

ARCANE BACKGROUND (Bard)
ARCANE SKILL: Performance (Spirit)
STARTING POWERS: 3
POWER POINTS: 10
Bards are highly skilled performers but they're more than simple musicians. Scraps of power hide in the shanties, stories, and songs echoing through pubs and churches. A bard coaxes these echoes, drawing on their legendary feats or offering a balm to their comrades.

Suggested Powers: boost trait, darksight, deflection, fear, healing, protection, quickness, speak language, succor, summon ally, warrior's gift
Backlash: Drawing on the Distant Past can leave an open door for phantoms to come forward and relive their glory days. 1 Ghost per Wild Card appears, make reaction rolls for each ghost. This is in addition to normal Backlash.

ARCANE BACKGROUND (Chimeric Might)
ARCANE SKILL: Bend Shape (Strength)
STARTING POWERS: 2
POWER POINTS: 15
Chimeras
tap into the land's Wild Magic, flexing an immaterial set of muscles to
alter their forms to grow quills, massive size, or a
sticky tongue as needed. Many live on the fringes of city and town,
hesitant to expose themselves to Wyldbreakers.

Note: A chimera's powers are limited to targeting themselves unless they pay for Additional Recipients or it makes narrative sense.

Suggested Powers: burrow, damage field, entangle, farsight, fly, growth, shape change, and anything else you can work out with your GM.
Backlash: The Wild Magic slips through your grip and runs rampant. All trees, grass, ivy, etc. in a league suddenly grow
large, aggressively biting into any buildings, roads, or walls in the
vicinity. This is in addition to normal Backlash.

ARCANE BACKGROUND (Sorcery)
ARCANE SKILL: Spellcasting (Smarts)
STARTING POWERS: 3
POWER POINTS: 10
Sorcerers understand the World is patchwork stitched together by unseen forces
and high powers. Through practice they learn the rituals, gestures, and words in
the Watchers' Blue Tongue to command the little needles,
producing magical effects when invoked.

Suggested Powers: banish, blind, boost/lower trait,
clairvoyance, deflection, detect/conceal arcana, dispel, divination, elemental manipulation, puppet, slow,
slumber, teleport, wall walker
Backlash: There's a
catch or snag when you release the spell, the ripping and tearing
fundamentally alters the area (large template) until the next full moon.
Water is not wet. Fire does not burn. Air chokes. Earth floats into the
sky. This is in addition to normal Backlash.

THE YONDER & ITS INHABITANTS
Everybeast has heard a similar tale: a beast has stopped breathing, pulled from a river or similar accident, and thought to be dead. When they cough up the water, or what-have-you, they recover quickly. Nonetheless they were lost to us for a time.

And where were they while not-quite-dead? Stuck as the soil beneath our paws. The Golden Meadow or Dark Forest promised by the Abbey? No. They tell us of a blue expanse full of chill light.

Show me a beast who claims ignorance of this place and I will show you a liar. They've been to the Yonder, an Otherworld arching over our heads we all visit briefly on the cusp of sleep. Which is important to remember. Unlike the Watchers, we're just passing through.

Clutch that Saint's medallion close when you sleep, lest the witch-birds swoop in and steal your good dreams. Those oddities of churning wings and fiery eyes have long memories and witness everything. I bet they remember before Reynard ruled Castle Borchardbriar.

Is it any wonder Sorcerers build towers to entreat them for secrets, power, and patronage?
Bartering the bones of our dead for their greed.
Hey everybody, I know things have been quiet for the past month but I've been busy writing on some cool projects. Here are the ones I can talk about:

I've contributed a mini-module to the 90's cyberpunk game Retropunk, by Samjoko Publishing, called Whalefall. Detailing the environs, hazards, and gigs you could get up to in the exclusive ship-breaking yard of the rich and famous. The game successfully kickstarted back in December and should be in print in April this year.

***UPDATE: I'm running Retropunk at Magcon and Chupacabracon this year. If you're in the area, come by and play!

Trophy is currently on Kickstarter with 48 hours to go and $150,000+ raised so far. It's a dark fantasy game of desperation and doom, if you like Darkest Dungeon, Hereditary, Descent, and The Ritual this game hits those notes masterfully. I wrote an Incursion (an adventure) for Trophy Dark called The Pit, it's a lot of High Plains Drifter, Dredd, and a little bit Event Horizon with swords.
It'll make sense when you read it. I'm also going to write a wing in the Roots of Old Kahldur mega dungeon.
So that's awesome.

If the campaign hits $185,000 then all the stretch goals will be included in the physical books.
***UPDATE: We hit all the stretch goals and all the digital content will be included in print.

Also - I'm working with Eli Kurtz and Dee Pennyway on a game called Oligarchy, a game of political folly, that's based on Trophy Dark and also on Kickstarter. The campaign has raised nearly $3,000 and beating that number would be really cool. In Trophy Dark you play doomed treasure hunters who meet their end scrabbling for glory and fortune. In Oligarchy you already have all that. You're rotten bastards in the Gilded Age, glutted on lucre and luxury. Every comfort at your fingertips and yet you want more. Not just more. You want it all. The world and the people will not take it any more.

Play an Asshole. Get Got.
***UPDATE: We raised nearly $4,000. Thank you!

SETTING RULES

ACCORD - Every Wild Card starts with maximum Accord equal to 2 + half their
Spirit die type. As things unfold the GM may call for a Accord check
with a modifier based on events. An Accord check is a Spirit roll, the
results may modify your current Accord score.

Murder - Killing for any reason, other than self defense, causes an Accord check at -2.
Backlash - The GM may call for an Accord roll due to Backlash from Powers.
Fear - When you fail a Fear check, lose 1 point of Accord.
Cursed Relic - using a cursed relic causes an Accord check.
Open Road - Each day you're on the Open Road, make an Accord check. Start with a -2 penalty and add +1 for each companion.
Viciousness - Predatory and cruel acts cause an Accord check, with a penalty at the GM's discretion.

Sliding into Savagery
The real risk of losing Accord is uncontrolled transformation, the Land's wild magic using your flesh as a canvas. But maybe a little monstrosity is fine given the stakes. When you lose points of Accord, you temporarily gain a Tinge. Draw a card for each point lost and applying the card of your choice. At your next Advancement you can choose to keep the Tinge instead, otherwise the Tinge blows away on the wind. Be sure to conceal you Tinges, the Wyld Breakers are always on the look for Folk meddling with the Old Times.
If your Accord reaches 0 then you're lost as the wild magic overwhelms you

BEAST WITHIN - During character creation, choose a Kith and make note of the traits in brackets. Spend a Benny to temporarily gain an Edge (you must meet the requirements) or 3 points of Racial Abilities that reflects your Kith via those traits. Beast Within lasts for a scene.

FOUR LEAFED CLOVER - You've made it this far, all Wild Cards start with the Lucky Edge.

PACTSTONES - Relics from the Bygone Days, these rings of standing stone were erected where Folk swore oaths and spilled blood. In these Fallen Days they still crackle with turbulent energies and a daring beast could coax it to the surface for their own ends if they'd just open their veins a little.

You may draw upon a pactstone's latent power through a Dramatic Task (5 Task Tokens in 3 rounds) using Occult and similarly appropriate skills, spending Wounds (+2 per Wound) and Accord (+1 per Accord) for bonuses on your rolls. If successful, you gain a magical charge. This charge may be spent to:

Treat every Power Point you spend as 2.

Increase the Range of a power to your Spirit in miles.

Increase the damage of a power by +3d6

Backlash: Failing the activation check provokes an Accord check with a -2 penalty. Draw an additional card for the Drift if you fail.

You can also knap pactstone shards into crude blades or arrowheads, gaining 2 points of Armor Penetration and ignoring bonuses to toughness from powers or special qualities.

ADDITIONAL SETTING RULES YOU MIGHT WANT TO USE*: Born A Hero, Dynamic Backlash, Wound Cap

*I use all of these.

CAT - One of the most populous Furred Folk, Cats are found everywhere, you'll find them in every holdfast and the Open Road. The superstitious often accuse them of hexes and other mischief. Aloof softpaws don't give a straight answer since things just go their way. [Adaptive, Softpaw, Sharp Claws]

PANGOLIN - Down South and Far Away in the Burning Lands, the Antseers sense a malady in the North. Young Pangolin warriors journey northward to the Kingdom, landing in Clowdertown. Hungry for fame and glory they take risks trusting in their armored scales to see them through. [Vainglorious, Scaly, Long Tail]

RACCOON -Without a home of their own, the Raccoons thrive in the cracks of society. Forging close bonds of business and friendship, Raccons are less clannish than other Folk and quickly adopt those on the fringe. [Gregarious, Cleanhands, Knows A Guy]

TURTLE - All across the Kingdom, you can find hardbacks plying the Rivers on their rafts and canoes. Their transient life affords them a certain comfort and security from Reynard's horrors. Insisting that things will change, but remain the same. [Simple, Hardback, Unflappable]

BADGER - Great in girth and stature, the great lords of Stonebones belong to rival clans, each keeping ledger of slights in a Book of Sacred Grudges. Ascending to the Iron Council requires erasing a Grudge with blood. Fallen nobles offer to open their veins a pinch for food if it will clear a Grudge. [Blustering, Ironlord, Big Bones]

MARTEN - Long and slender, the walkers were a common sight on the Open Road around Whisper helping sedentary Folk with seasonal work. Work that just doesn't happen. Their colored wagons went from long trains to armed encampments. Erecting new Pactstones and actively harassing the Watchers Above, they're playing a long game other Folk can't see.
[Mystical, Walker, Always Hungry]

MOLE - Before the Badgers came and Stonebones was even a city, the Moles burrowed throughout the Eastmarch hills. The Ironlords quickly turned them out of their tunnels before the stripmining started in earnest. Many blindeye elders fear the Pits may release sightless horrors if they go much deeper. [Secretive, Blindeye, Heavy Claws]

RODEN - An umbrella term for a fairly wide range of Folk the Roden are small, quick and always on edge. They've carved a niche tackling the most dangerous jobs. In Stonebones operating the foundries and furnaces. A dangerous place for any Beast, but there will always be more Roden. [Negligible, Roden, Quick as a Flash]

HARE - Quick footed and insular, the Hares of Sunset Hills often clashed with the Ironwood Clans in the past. After the Accord, they're combined efforts created the greatest holdfast in the Kingdom. Since then, their great numbers have gone from an asset to a liability and the Senate of Sky and Soil exclusively sent Hares and Squirrels to Borchardbriar for the Tithe. The Senate soon found itself overturned, though the founding families still retain clout with the Ruling Committee. [Altruistic, Longear, Leaps & Bounds]

SQUIRREL - Quick to fight and slow to back down, the former Ironwood Clans clutch to rusting martial traditions flaking away in their grasp. Visitors flock to the Vault each year for the Battle of Red Branch. A holiday when all eligible young Squirrels fight a vicious "King of the Hill" struggle in the boughs of Last Tree. The winner is exempt from the Tithe, though some enter Reynard's service at the opportunity to exercise their skills. [Brave, Ironwood, Battle-wise]

HEDGEHOG - Known for hospitality and high spirits, Hedgehogs are welcome anywhere. Which is good because they can be found anywhere. It's traditional that upon reaching age of majority, troupes of pricklepigs venture out into the world and fully experience it for themselves. Some love the places they visit so much that they stay, and home becomes a distant memory. [Punchy, Pricklepig, Lucky Charm]

OTTER - Where there's a waterway, there'll be Otters. Born to the river and in love with the sea, they work hard and play harder. Organized into clan-like crews, they fish and revel with no-holds-barred. [Jocular, Waterdog, Brawny]

FOXES - Few Folk have it as rough as Reynard's get. Foxes largely fled to Whisper & the Open Road rather than continue bearing the brunt of grief and rage. Their kits go to the Tithe too, but that gets missed in the outrage. In Whisper the Redtails made themselves useful to House Maugrim and received protection. That arrangement ended with the Prophet's rise and the Foxes are once more out in the cold. [Sly, Redtail, Reynard's Get]

WOLVES - The founding Folk of Whisper, they built the holdfast from the bones of the Red Rock Cult's worship sites and suppressed the Cult under the guidance of Saint Magna. All was well until Magna Maugrim returned, proclaiming a second coming of the Red Rock's Naked Gods. Salting old wounds and dismantling her namesake's handiwork. The Wolves are now in their "rightful" place at the top of the food chain. [Fierce, Howler, Terrible Jaws]

BEAVERS - Unified under St. Magna's vision, the Northern Beavers transitioned from sacrificial meals to Whisper's true architects and builders. With the recent upheaval, their gains are rapidly unraveling. Many families have already fled under cover of darkness, seeking out Mudslide, the floating city. [Industrious, Miller, Natural Swimmer]
HOGS - The bane of the southern Open Road, the Wild Sounders roam, root and rut wherever they like. Only the threat of Reynard's attention causes them to step lightly. Too much ruckus and the Fox King's war bands will pour out of Borchardbriar and raid their litters. Not to be confused with the more congenial pinkskins. [Aggressive, Bristlehide, Iron Gullet]

OPOSSUM - Life outside the Holdfasts is dangerous for the small and squishy. The Opossum eke out a living by staying up and out of the way. Their treetop hamlets stay quiet and camouflaged, high in the boughs of tupelo trees. The only business they have below the boughs involves the breeding, care and harvesting of venomous snakes. [Shy, Wormtail, Adderproof]
The first book in Benedict Patrick's Yarnworld series, They Mostly Come Out At Night opens a window into a primeval forest, helpless woodsfolk, their fears, and the vicious beasts that stalk them beneath shrouded boughs. An atmospheric fantasy that marries subtle world building with the dark heart of fairy tales. Composed of three interweaving narratives: the present plight of the protagonist plagued by nightmares, the lessons taught by the mythical(?) Magpie King to his son, and the folktales comprising the forest folk's oral tradition. They form a tale and setting that still sticks with me despite the 2 years since I read it. Everything has a weight of mythology and meaning to it, though we don't spend a lot of time ruminating on that meaning in the text. It's fast paced, like a roller coaster.

If you're a fan of Scott Snyder's Batman run, Grimm's Fairy Tales, or The Sandman then you owe it to yourself to check this book out. You can find it here.
Written by Zedeck Siew, presented by the Hydra Cooperative, and published by Exalted Funeral. The Lorn Song of the Bachelor is an adventure focused on a stretch of tropical river haunted by a seemingly immortal crocodile. Whether hired by an exploitative company or following rumors of their own volition your adventurers quickly find themselves in deep current far enough from shore that they just can't reach. Brimming with Zedeck's fantastic prose (check some out here) and Nadhir Nor's evocative illustrations, Lorn Song presents a well organized adventure location and the forces, internal and external, coming to bear. Dripping with flavor and sense of place, the climate and environs of the SE Asian Pacific really comes through. We should all take notes on this and how the adventure grapples with complex themes of colonialism. Overall, it shows what independent creators are capable of and show why the SE Asian RPG scene is one to watch going forward.
Food is an abstract measure of foraged and preserved foodstuffs. They could be confit, cured, dried, jellied, jugged, pickled, salted, etc. The everyday meals and snacks your characters consume are not tracked, instead 1 Food is equivalent to a large jar of jam or pickled herring - more food than a prudent Beast would eat alone in a single sitting but not so large that you couldn't transport it easily. The lifeblood of the underground economy since the field's harvest ripens swollen and sour.
Never fit for anybeast's consumption.

When a character would gain an Advancement, they also earn 1 Food which can be spent on the following Downtime Activities:

Acquire an Asset - Gain temporary use of a special item, a gang, a vehicle, or a Major Favor outside your Network to use during your next clash.

Long-term Project - Researching a lost ballad, developing a sorcerous ritual, investigating a mystery, building trust, or courting a new contact requires a Dramatic Task that may take several Downtimes (or several Food) to complete.

Recover - Healing comes at a price in Borchardbriar, it costs 1 Food to bounce back from the Injury Table.

Downtime Activites all require a Test and if you (or an ally) succeed, then you can buy a Raise for 1 additional Food.

You can also keep unspent Food to yourself or pool Food with other players in the Cell's Stockpile. Food in the Stockpile may be spent to:

Increase the Cell's Rank: Raise the Cell's Rank by 1 which increases Rep and possibly Resistance. Increasing the Cell's Rank costs a number of Food equal to the next Rank.

Buy a Hideout Edge: Edges cost 2 Food. A Cell's maximum number of Edges is equal to the Rank.

Be aware that if you choose to horde Food, there's a chance it could be stolen though it would be on hand if you need a Favor from an NPC or something. If you keep Food in your inventory you can:

Sweeten Disposition: You can improve a Reaction Roll by +2.

Wild Chance: Draw and keep an additional card from the Adventure Deck.

GM: If a player is undecided on which downtime activity to perform, offer a long-term project idea. You've got a clue to their interests and what they like. Suggest a project that will dovetail with those.

So. How did we get here and where are we going?

For the past 2-3 years (do I have longtime readers?) I've been tinkering part time with a Savage Worlds setting called Borchardbriar - a fantasy world of talking animals on perilous adventures and sowing rebellion to overthrow the Fox King Reynard, a grim and terrible monarch. But the pitch wasn't that concise. It hadn't been honed to that razor point.

Stemming from a mash up of Redwall/Robin Hood + The Old Kingdom + Armello, the summary/pitch meandered and often restated the initial post from May 2017. Trying for a twist on the dark/gritty fantasy settings and stories that have become increasingly popular. And in many ways filling a gap in Savage Worlds' extant settings since Evernight hasn't been updated for a couple of editions.

We even did a podcast mini-series set in this earlier iteration here.

If you listened through the series you'll notice some other influences creeping in, shades of noir like True Detective and Blacksad creeping in. Continued exploration saw bits of Jesse Bullington's Folly of the World (Early Modern period instead of pseudo-medieval), Charles de Lint's Riddle of the Wren (folklore as a window into a mis-remembered past), and Daniel Polansky's The Builders (why you fight) surfacing. At that point I felt ready to start pulling the blogposts and handwritten notes together into something resembling finished work.

However, mapping the older material to Richard Woolcock's Savage Worlds outline showed gaps in the material. Ultimately gaps that were kinda there on purpose. Holes for players and other GMs to fill in, to make their own mark on things. Additionally the scale for Borchardbriar had shifted with SWADE's release. Instead of a paperback, probably a zine. Maybe in time for ZineQuest 2. We'll see.

So what's next for Borchardbriar? How much is being recycled?

Am I reinventing the wheel completely?

Maybe a little bit.

The Resistance
Why do you fight?

Did they snatch your young? Or did your da' take your place? Does a Wyldbreaker lean on you for "protection" money? Are you just trying to make some quick coin? Inspired by an unlikely bard in the public house? Or easing the hurt in the world?

There's a gash in things these days, you can see it with your eyes. Everyone's at least a little hungry. An ache in your stomach spreads through your bones. A weariness you just can't shake like rot on fruit. A grey-green bruise on your soul.

While it might all be falling to pieces 'round our ears, it doesn't have to be.

That's why I fight.

The Means
How does your Cell oppose Reynard's regime? Choose one of the options below:

Agitate - Flare tempers.

Sabotage - Break stuff.

Liberate - Release folks.

Terrorize - Sow fear.

When you perform actions in line with your Cell's Means, roll an additional Wild Die. You still use the highest result.

The Network
Who is on your side? Choose 2 of the options below:

Yasmine - The Gunsmith. Has a new method for creating Salamanderdust she needs to perfect.

Sebastien - The Patrician. Holds sympathies with the working families who pay most of the Tithe.

Toni - The Pot-Stirrer. Born under dubious signs, things never go smooth.

Keith - The Medium. Chased out of Stonebones, he claims to hear the dead.

Cass - The Raconteur. Spins a yarn so fine the oak tree bends to listen. Wanted for sedition.

"Lucky" Luci - The Gangleader. Gathered disenfranchised youth for mutual defense.

"Miss Kitty" - The Madam. Operates a feralhouse where genteel folk can stretch their claws and behave badly.

Horace - The Merchant. Snakebite's illegal but that doesn't mean thirst went away.

Roland - The Stevedore. The biggest paws and the strongest back down on the Docks.

Aderfi - The Explorer. From the Burning South, been to Manykings and seen the Edge.

Pedro - The Astronomer. Used to be a navigator but retired from salt spray to soft soil. Owls cluster close.

They will do Minor Favors for you without cost but Major Favors cost Food.

Rep
Your starting Rep is 0

Resistance
Your starting Resistance is 0
Published by the Melsonian Arts Council, TROIKA! is a
science fantasy RPG sharing a wavelength with Michael Moorcock’s
Eternal Champion, Book of the New Sun, Vimanarama, Etched City, and
the Archive 81 podcast (I’ll talk about these later). Humanity escaped
the crushing grasp of Earth’s gravity a long time ago and things have
only GOTTEN STRANGER. Bollywood space gods plunging through eldritch
portals to explore the crystal spheres are the tip of the weirdo iceberg
when you thumb through the randomized backgrounds. Some quick examples –
questing knight, cacogen, thaumaturge, rhino-man, and monkeymonger for
starters. The setting is filled out and explained in item and background
descriptions, in the margins of the text like a Dark Souls or
Bloodborne game.

Mechanically speaking, it does everything you
want an OSR-style game to do – create tension and sense of danger – and
only uses the D6. It also leans on D66 tables which I’m a huge fan of.
The most unique design feature is how it handles initiative via a blind
grab bag, very similar to the system used in the miniatures game Confrontation.
You pull a token from a grab bag and the corresponding character takes
their turn, but there’s also an End Turn token so… someone might not get
an action that turn.

It’s elegant, it’s pretty, and gets the most out of the book-as-physical-artifact with tables inside the covers.

You can find a no-frills/artless version here under the SRD and a physical copy on Amazon here.
PROSPECT was released earlier this year and it’s a
space western focused on activities nearly always overlooked –
prospecting, mining, and claim jumping! Not gonna get too deep on this,
I’ll just say – if your favorite parts of Ridley Scott films are the
world-building via material culture and how the camera feels in the scene then you should carve out the time and watch PROSPECT before the year is over in…
13 days? That sounds about right.

You can watch PROSPECT on Hulu right now.

You can browse the props here and the concept art here.Aaron Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08760432935440346327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944237944047565489.post-90325527333016529542019-12-12T11:47:00.001-08:002019-12-12T11:57:35.952-08:002019 Gift Guide

With
Christmas around the corner let’s be honest , it can be difficult to
shop for us. For as much time and money gamers spend accumulating
geegaws: books, maps, miniatures, dice towers, dice trays, dice bags,
and, hell, dice in general. Folks outside the Culture are likely not
aware of differences between core books and supplements (ex: White Wolf
used to publish player’s guides in addition to core rulebooks but the
player’s guides weren’t really useful) or which games utilize
extra components that are evergreen presents (ex: Savage Worlds’
reliance on playing cards means a cool deck is always welcome). So if you have relatives who don't know what to get you for Christmas or your birthday next year, point them at this.
A Dragon Walks Into A Bar by Jef Aldrich & Jon Taylor

Do
you like D&D as a core cultural touchstone? Do you like all those
D&D-centric episodes of cartoons, sitcoms, and video games?
How about dad jokes?
If
you loved Cameron’s sense of humor from the first 3 seasons of Max’s
Minions and want it distilled in a book, then this is it. Just released
last week, this original work by the hosts of the System Mastery podcast
is sure to elicit a chuckle or guffaw from your friends or loved ones
who are into this sorta thing. And it’s not just a book of jokes, there’s
some tables useful sidebars which impart information or insight into
this weird, young hobby we all participate in.

Here’s a good joke:

Where would you find a blink dogs?
About three feet to the right of where you left them.

Because they.. teleport…
never mind.
The Ultimate RPG Gameplay Guide & The Ultimate RPG Character Backstory Guide by James D’Amato

Covering
both of these at once because they contain complementary materials. If
you regularly GM the Gameplay Guide provides advice for effective
preparation and communication with your players to lean into engagement,
exploring themes, and maximizing the stuff your group wants to see at
the table. James’ thoughtful essays ring with his experience both as a
Second City trained improviser and GM/producer for one of the top Actual
Play podcast networks around. The book’s exercises, worksheets, and
prompts help you (the GM) with praxis – walking the walking, applying
the ideas and shaping table behaviors so you get the best out of
yourself and your players.

Conversely, if you’re on the other
side of the GM Screen 9 times out of 10 then the Backstory Guide
provides prompts and exercises rooted in improv theater that prompts new
ways of thinking and applying the most staid and dullest part of
character creation – the backstory. The book’s organization is divided
into echelons corresponding to character level, over time you develop
themes and motifs to form a throughline. Enabling your GM to bring
these elements into focus. Something you can hear James do on his
current Campaign podcast – Skyjacks.
Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master by Michael Shea

The
title directly addresses the 400 lbs. gorilla in the RPG scene but
embodies a solid thesis usable in any game – YOU (the GM) will never be
as creative as all of THEM (your players), so pull a Tom Sawyer and get
them to paint the fence for you. Distribute the cognitive workload.

With
great advice, pertinent examples, and checklists this book doesn’t
provide as many hand’s on applications as the Gameplay Guide. Instead
Return dwells in greater specificity on its topics, whether pros &
cons to different styles of combat or conveying the value of reskinning
existing monsters instead of creating ones from wholecloth. If The
Ultimate RPG Gameplay Guide sounded too hippie-dippie to you then Return
of the Lazy Dungeon Master occupies a cozier middle ground.
Savage Worlds Adventure Edition by Shane Hensley

The
latest edition of our (Carol and I) favorite game dropped back in
September and you can get this gorgeous hardcover for only $30. A more
in depth review can be found over on Tommy Brownell’s blog over here
and I’ll do my own dissection and discussion of the text for the
benefit of folks who’ve never played Savage Worlds before at a later
time. This thing is the real deal, people often complain about carrying
around too many books and D&D is a $150 buy-in for the 3 core
rulebooks.

What takes D&D 3 bloated books, Savage Worlds does in 1 sleek volume for 20% of the price.
Monster of the Week by Michael Sands & The Tome of Mysteries by Michael Sands and assorted authors (including me)

Tired
of dungeon delving and want to do something else? Love weekly
procedural shows but aren’t sure how to get that to the table?

Then
Monster of the Week and it’s companion volume have got you covered.
Based on the popular Apocalypse Engine you’ll only need to print out the
playbooks and 2 six-sided dice to start playing. Character creation is
fast and let’s you hit the table running in interesting directions,
you’ll have a game full of interesting conflicts and complications in no
time.

And, yea, mysteries are hard but there’s a WHOLE TOME OF
THEM! Want more Fringe and less Supernatural? The Tome of Mysteries has
that too! It’s covers a lot of ground very quickly with scenario seeds,
additional playbooks, a ton of sample mysteries, and custom moves you
can re-work for your own game. And if you’re doing Call of Cthulhu or
another investigation game then use the sample mysteries anyway so you
can still inject some weirdness without it necessarily being the Usual Suspects (Cthulhu, Dagon, Yog-Sothoth, etc).
Dice from Metallic Dice Games

You might think
any set of clack-clack stones are the same as any other but if you ask
Carol or Larissa or any other person with the dice fever, you’ll find
you’re wrong. Can’t go wrong buying more dice, and I recommend Metallic
Dice Games’ products, they’re lustrous and have nice hand feel. They
have some great color combinations and they’re timely with their
deliveries. Their latest kickstarter arrived a little earlier than
estimated, a far cry from the Kraken Dice fiasco earlier this year.

When it was first announced, Black Leopard, Red Wolf was billed an “African Game of Thrones”. The go-to byline for any fantasy series with epic scale promising grit, violence, and realpolitik in contrast to the “pastoral” popular perception of mainstream fantasy. A wrongheaded comparison on multiple levels that we don’t have time or space for today (catch me on the Discord). That sales pitch missed the mark even though it drummed up interest in Black Leopard, Red Wolf prior to release. What arrived was far stranger, denser, wondrous, and more surreal than Game of Thrones and most fantasy novels on the shelf.
What starts as a straightforward testimony from a simple spoken narrator paints a lurid picture of the Kingdoms, their struggles, and the violence in all the spaces in between. Nested narratives lead to a Rashomon labyrinth of perspectives and conflicting account. Planting and watering seeds of doubt regarding Tracker, the protagonist, and his veracity even though he says from the beginning: “The child is dead. There is nothing left to know.”

Know this: Tracker has a dog’s nose and won’t lead you astray.
Dirge of Urazya is a zine by Jack Shear of Dolorous Exhumation Press and Tales of the Grotesque & Dungeonesque fame. After making a splash in the RPG scene with his 13 Flavors of Fear, Jack has built a reputation for the lurid, the blasphemous, and the weird with each subsequent release from demonic Western to Gothic blood opera. While most of his work runs 100+ pages, Dirge of Urazya is on the opposite end at a sleek 24 and I love its brevity.

While Umberwell details an Industrial urban hellscape rich with grime, Dirge offers a lean set of prompts so your whole group can create the Gothic, Western, post-apocalyptic, science fantasy world promised by Netflix’ Castlevania (which I swear is Warren Ellis’ Vampire Hunter D fanfiction) and Into The Badlands (Danny Wu’s post-apocalypse wuxia western also available on Netflix). The PDF is only $4.00 (currently on sale for $2.68) and offers far more in value. I recommend pretty much everything he’s written, Jack’s name on a title is a stamp of quality and weirdness you shouldn’t overlook.

Jack provided a good overview of Dirge's development and assembly here and I'll similarly follow that roadmap with my own creative projects in the future.Aaron Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08760432935440346327noreply@blogger.com0
